Heavy duty casters from Blickle

Blickle Räder+Rollen offers heavy duty casters in many variants. The product range features both pressed steel and welded steel heavy duty casters with a load capacity of up to 50,000 kg. In the standard range, heavy duty casters are available up to a mounting height of 710 mm. On customer request, Blickle develops tailored special heavy duty caster versions.

Definition of heavy duty casters

Heavy duty casters are used for applications with heavy loads and/or higher travelling speeds. Heavy duty casters feature a particularly stable design. To be able to absorb in some cases very high loads, heavy duty casters with two wheels (twin casters) are also used in this area. For vibration-free transport, spring-loaded heavy duty casters are particularly suitable. Typical applications for heavy duty casters include shelf stacking machines and industrial trucks, assembly and transport systems etc.

The following selection criteria must be observed when selecting heavy duty casters:

  •     Load capacity
  •     Tread material
  •     Wheel Ø, starting and rolling resistance
  •     Bearing type
  •     Environmental factors, temperature, chemistry and corrosion

Determining the required load capacity for heavy duty casters

The required load capacity for heavy duty casters is calculated using the weight of the transport unit and its load, divided by the number of load-bearing heavy duty casters. The result is multiplied by a safety factor dependent on the standard conditions of the heavy duty casters:

T = Load capacity per heavy duty caster
E = Weight of the transport unit
Z = Maximum load
n = Number of load-bearing heavy duty casters
S = Safety factor

For heavy duty casters, the safety factor S takes into consideration deviations from the standard conditions (smooth floor, walking speed, uniform load distribution, travelling straight, ambient temperature from +15°C to +28°C). In addition to the speed, the safety factor is influenced by the ratio of the wheel Ø to the height of the obstacle. The greater the deviation from the standard conditions for heavy duty castors, the greater the factor S that must be selected.

A differentiation is made between four standard conditions:

   Manual movement with heavy duty casters for indoor use:
    (height of the obstacle < 5% of the wheel Ø): safety factor: 1.0 to 1.5

    Manual movement with heavy duty casters for outdoor use:

    (height of the obstacle > 5% of the wheel Ø): safety factor: 1.5 to 2.2

    Motor-driven movement with heavy duty casters for indoor use:

    (height of the obstacle < 5% of the wheel Ø): safety factor: 1.4 to 2.0

Motor-driven movement with heavy duty casters for outdoor use:
    safety factor: 2.0 to 3.0

For heavy duty casters with ball bearings, speeds over 4  km/h are possible with a simultaneous load capacity reduction. If a wheel or fixed caster is primarily subjected to static loads, a load capacity increased by up to 25% can be assumed. In the event of long endurance times under high loads, the risk of the wheel tread flattening must be taken into account.

Starting, rolling and swivel resistance of heavy duty casters

The starting and rolling resistance of heavy duty casters is significantly influenced by the condition of the floor, total load, wheel Ø, deformation and treat type, as well as the bearing type.

The swivel resistance of heavy duty casters is influenced by the following factors:

  •     Tread
  •     Tread & tire hardness
  •     Tread
  •     Offset
  •     Surface
The manoeuvrability of a transport unit depends on the number, type and arrangement of the heavy duty casters. These factors in turn influence the load capacity, mobility, control, turning radius and capsizing stability of a trolley.

Manoeuvrability with heavy duty casters

The heavy duty casters in particular must be positioned accordingly depending on the manoeuvrability and movability requirements for devices and machines. Below, different options for arranging the heavy duty casters are described:

  •     Three swivel casters of the same mounting height
  •     Four swivel casters of the same mounting height
  •     Two fixed and swivel casters of the same mounting height
  •     Two fixed and swivel casters, wherein the swivel casters have a somewhat lower mounting height
  •     Four swivel and two fixed casters of the same mounting height

LH series heavy duty casters

Pressed steel swivel bracket, heavy duty caster version:
strong, pressed steel parts, heavy fork and top plate fitting, double ball bearing in the swivel head, four hardened bearing seats, bolted and secured with very strong central kingpin. Minimum wear at high loads. Very high resistance to shocks and impacts:
- Load capacity of up to 900 kg
- Temperature resistance from -30°C to +130°C

LO series heavy duty casters

Welded steel heavy duty caster swivel bracket:
Solid welded steel construction, double ball bearing in the swivel head, four hardened bearing seats, with grease nipple, bolted and secured with a welded very strong central kingpin:
- Load capacity of up to 1200 kg
- Temperature resistance from -30°C to +130°C


LOD heavy duty caster series

Welded steel heavy duty caster twin swivel bracket:
Solid welded steel construction, double ball bearing in the swivel head, four hardened bearing seats, with grease nipple, bolted and secured with a welded very strong central kingpin:
- Load capacity of up to 1,200 kg
- Temperature resistance from -30°C to +130°C

LS series heavy duty casters

Welded steel heavy duty caster swivel bracket, heavy swivel head version:
Particularly rugged welded steel construction, axial grooved ball bearing DIN 711 and tapered roller bearing DIN 720 in the swivel head, with grease nipple, bolted and secured with a welded very strong central kingpin:
- Load capacity of up to 12,000 kg
- Temperature resistance from -30°C to +100°C

LSD series heavy duty casters

Welded steel heavy duty caster twin swivel bracket, heavy swivel head version:
Particularly rugged welded steel construction, axial grooved ball bearing DIN 711 and tapered roller bearing DIN 720 in the swivel head, with grease nipple, bolted and secured with a welded very strong central kingpin:
- Load capacity of up to 12,000 kg

LHF series spring-loaded heavy duty casters

Pressed steel swivel bracket, heavy duty caster version, with steel spring:

Minimum wear at high loads. Very high resistance to shocks and impacts. Rugged hinged plate construction with steel spring:

LPFE series spring-loaded heavy duty casters

Welded steel heavy duty caster swivel bracket with polyurethane torsion spring:
Solid welded steel construction, heavy-duty forged fork, one, or from a wheel Ø of 125x50 mm, two sealed, grooved ball bearings in the swivel head lubricated with long-life grease. Excellent spring damper characteristics thanks to patented Woodruff key design:
- Load capacity of up to 800 kg
- Temperature resistance from -20°C to +80°C

LSFN series spring-loaded heavy duty casters

Welded steel heavy duty caster swivel bracket with steel spring:
Particularly rugged welded steel construction, axial grooved ball bearing DIN 711 and tapered roller bearing DIN 720 in the swivel head, with grease nipple, bolted and secured with a welded very strong central kingpin. Rugged fork, hinged plate construction and steel spring mechanism:
